Scalp micropigmentation, or SMP, is a technique in which tiny dots of pigment are placed into the upper layer of the scalp. They imitate hair follicles and visually thicken thinning hair or cover a bald patch. It is a high-margin service with growing demand that still very few people can do well.

Who the course is for

For permanent make-up artists, hairdressers, barbers and beauticians. Previous experience with pigmentation is an advantage but not a requirement — we start with anatomy and build the technique from the ground up.

What you will learn

• Scalp anatomy, types and stages of hair loss and how to choose your approach accordingly
• Indications and contraindications, running a consultation and what to have signed off in writing
• Mixing and choosing the pigment shade to match hair colour and skin phototype
• Designing the front hairline — the most common place for mistakes that stay visible for years
• Dot placement technique: depth, density, pressure, angle and speed
• Working on scars and on female thinning, which needs a different approach than a male receding hairline
• Multi-session protocols and planning the layering
• Hygiene, sterilisation and the legal duties of a studio
• Aftercare and handling complications
• Pricing the service, presenting it to the client and photographing results for your portfolio

How the course runs

Two days in our studio in Prague. Day one covers theory, shade mixing and practising the technique on synthetic skin. Day two is work on a live model under the trainer's supervision, from designing the hairline to finishing the first layer. We work in groups of no more than four people so that everyone gets attention.
