What's the difference between an LED and a UV nail lamp?

An LED lamp cures gel using a narrow spectrum of LEDs, curing faster, generating less heat on the nail, and lasting longer, but it needs gels formulated for LED curing. A UV lamp uses tubes with a broader light spectrum, cures more slowly, but works with a wider range of older or lower-cost gels.

What wattage should you look for in a curing lamp?

For professional use, look for an LED lamp of at least 48 W, or at least 36 W for a UV lamp. Lower wattage can leave thicker layers of gel — especially colour and builder gels — under-cured.

How do you know if a lamp is curing gel properly?

Properly cured gel is firm once removed from the lamp and not tacky on the surface (wipe gels leave a thin sticky layer that you wipe off), and it doesn't change colour or texture during further work. If the gel stays soft or dents under pressure, the lamp's output is too low or its LEDs are wearing out.

What hygiene precautions matter for a lamp shared across a salon?

Clean the inside of the lamp regularly with a disinfectant that's safe on plastic, especially the surface where the client's hand rests. Never wipe the LEDs or reflector with water or harsh chemicals, as this can damage them and reduce curing output.
